Mark Thomas


Mark Thomas is a global business consultant, author and speaker specializing in business planning, managing change, human resource management and executive leadership development.

A highly accomplished facilitator, he regularly designs, leads and facilitates top team sessions on a wide range of business planning and change management issues and initiatives. Mark also manages a wide range of executive development and organization development projects including executive leadership, change, coaching and business partnering skills development.

Based in Monmouth, Wales, Mark works across the globe – he has worked with over 100 major multi-national and global corporations in over 45 different countries.

Prior to establishing Performance Dynamics Management Consultants in 1993, Mark spent several years with Price Waterhouse Management Consultants in London. Here he advised private and public sector clients on the business and organizational change issues arising out of strategic reviews, mergers and acquisitions.

Mark’s early career was spent in corporate management and included a range of executive roles in organizational development with the US NCR Corporation and UK Unigate Group.

Mark is a frequent conference and seminar speaker on business, organization and human resource issues. He has Chaired several major international business conferences in places such as Vienna, Brussels, Istanbul, Lisbon, Paris and London

Educated at the University of Wales and the London School of Economics, Mark is a Fellow of the UK Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development. He is an Assistant Professor and Visiting Faculty member at the Tias School for Business and Society in Holland, and a regular faculty member of the Engie Corporate University. In addition he has also worked with organisations such as the American Management Association (AMA), the UK Institute of Directors, Management Centre Europe (MCE) in Brussels and the Middle East Management Centre.

As well as writing many articles on business issues he is the author of six books on management.

Nick Kelly

Associate Director

Former soldier, schoolteacher and retailer, Nick began his consultancy career with Price Waterhouse. He worked with blue chip clients on assignments ranging from the restructuring of Slovenia’s PTT to the reorganization of the Museum of London. He managed teams of consultants working from London to Moscow. He was responsible for winning assignments, assignment profitability and recruiting and training new consultants.

From Price Waterhouse, he joined Towry Law as its first HR and IT Director just prior to flotation on the London Stock Exchange. Headhunted to JP Morgan his consultancy skills were put to use as Vice President responsible for the HR aspects of two major divestitures in Europe that resulted in a restructuring across six EU countries.

He went on to become a director in the corporate banking division of the Union Bank of Switzerland before joining the investment banking arm of Barclays as its Global Head of HR. With a staff of 170 HR professionals, he supervised the people aspects of the business’ transition to Barclays Capital and the sale of its equities and corporate finance divisions to Credit Suisse First Boston. He worked with consultants from Andersen Consulting and Bain & Co on the restructuring of the investment banking business reducing headcount in some divisions by 66% and costs by 41%.

Nick now leads on a number of our core consultancy and programme services including – Business Planning, HR Strategy, Business Partnering Skills and Leadership Development

Mike Smith

Associate Director

Mike Smith is a global consultant working in the fields of executive development and coaching.

Mike spent the early part of his career in the learning and teaching field working with the University of Leeds. He followed this with a successful career in human resources and development with Divisions of ICI where he was involved in a wide variety of corporate initiatives on an international basis.

Mike has since worked as a highly successful consultant in the core fields of leadership and executive development. He has developed and led a series of highly successful development programmes. His activities also encompass team building and organization change initiatives. In addition, he undertakes executive coaching assignments and is well versed in the use of 360 degree feedback and psychometric instruments. He makes particular use of diagnostic instruments to drive behavioural change amongst individuals and executive teams. In recent years he has being developing his work in relation to the notion of ‘emotional intelligence’ and executive success.

Mike works throughout Europe and his consulting work covers all industries. He works with many of the world’s major corporations and his development programmes are consistently rated ‘excellent’. He is also a regular conference speaker on organization and people issues

Jan Thomas


Jan Thomas is Performance Dynamics’ Research and Operations Director.

In her role as Performance Dynamics’ Research Director, Jan leads our continuous research into the development of new and existing products and services. This research spans all aspects of our consultancy and executive development work. Her particular research interests include: human resource management, change management and; marketing strategies and techniques, and new product development. Jan’s recent research projects have included: the concepts and practices of ‘Corporate Universities’, their service provision and overall effectiveness and; the ’state-of-the-art’ in business leadership concepts, theories and practices as advocated by the world’s leadership gurus. Jan also undertakes selected client-specific research commissions.

In her role as our Operations Director, Jan is responsible for financial management, client service management and providing operational support to all aspects of our consulting service delivery.

Jan was educated at the University of Birmingham where she majored in Geography and Planning. She then completed her postgraduate degree in Human Resource Management at the London School of Economics.

Her early career was in Human Resource Management where she performed numerous HR operational roles with the Civil Aviation Authority in the UK. She then worked for several years with a financial services division of Lloyds TSB bank where she covered all aspects of Human Resource Management including employee relations, rewards and executive development. Following a career break, Jan then moved into the field of market research with RHM in the UK before working with Performance Dynamics where she holds a Partnership role.

Peter Long

Associate Director

Peter has an extensive corporate business and Human Resource background having held several senior management and Director roles with Metal Box, Rank Xerox, Forte, ICL and S1.

Peter’s experience covers extensive strategic and organization change scenarios including re-organizations, major customer service/quality programmes, performance management, and mergers and acquisitions. He has also led and revitalized Human Resource functions.

Whilst at Rank Xerox he was responsible for HR Operations; HR Strategy & Planning; Management Development and Quality. In the mid 1990s he was headhunted to work for Forte Hotels Group as Director of Organization & Management Development and was heavily involved in the hostile takeover led by Granada. He then moved to ICL as HR Director, Infrastructure Services Division and was again actively involved in major business change.

Peter then moved to the world of financial services and software at S1 . Since then he has worked in the consultancy world as an adviser on a wide range of business and human resource issues and in some instances has taken on interim assignments as a senior HR executive .

Throughout his career Peter has spoken at business conferences on HR issues and was a key speaker on Management Centre Europe’s highly successful Human Resource Strategy Programme in the mid 1990s. His in-depth operational experience and expertise meant he was often invited into other corporations to lend his knowledge and advice – he now lends that experience as part of our consulting team.

Peter was also awarded the 1998 Winner of ICL Chief Executive’s Excellence Award and was also winner of Rank Xerox’s Honours Club for outstanding personal performance in 1988 and 1992.

Peter was educated at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth and holds a postgraduate Human Resource qualification from the Polytechnic of Central London. He is also a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development
